In 2004Lewisham Council announced plans to demolish
Ladywell Leisure Centre in 2007 - we saved it! The pool will stay open until the forecast replacement is ready. Sadly the plan is awfully inadequate and instead of being a plan for a community sport and leisure centre it is a plan for a lifestyle pool for the new residential developments to be built in front of Lewisham Station.

A Message from the Mayor
"Dear All,
Following something said, about announcements that I will be making on
swimming pools, at the last Area Forum the press have been making
enquiries about what is proposed. Rather than let a half baked
story get out I have given them a clear briefing on my views - the
actual report will go to Mayor and Cabinet on 6 April and obviously on
to Scrutiny. I hope it is something you will feel not only able to
support but quite excited about!
Wavelengths
The report recommends a feasibility study for building a new 25m
pool as part of Wavelengths Leisure Centre. The study will be
commissioned as part of a master plan for the development of Deptford
Town Centre and the Giffin Street Area. The estimated capital
cost is about £3.4m.
This should happen over the summer with a further report coming
in the autumn so that I can agree the detailed proposal. I aim to
get this open before Ladywell closes in 2007.
Forest Hill
The report indicates that we can renovate Forest Hill for around
£1.5m. This would make the building safe and give it at least 10
years more life. Alternatively we could flatten and build a new
facility on the site for about £2.5m which would clearly have much more
modern facilities. The report recommends that we consult Forest
Hill residents on what they would prefer. Again this will start
in June and be reported back in the Autumn.
The Message
I am giving the press two very simple messages as follows :
Deptford - The least that will happen is a new 25m lane swimming
pool - if the masterplan comes up with anything better great but I am
committed to a new pool.
Forest Hill - I am going to make sure there continues to be a
swimming pool in Forest Hill - I have a completely open mind on whether
we refurbish or build a new one.
