About Us

In 2004Lewisham Council announced plans to demolish Ladywell Leisure Centre in 2007 - we saved it! The pool will stay open until the forecast replacement is ready.  Sadly the plan is awfully inadequate and instead of being a plan for a community sport and leisure centre it is a plan for a lifestyle pool for the new residential developments to be built in front of Lewisham Station.

Lewisham Council has a wish list

Last week, Lewisham Council organized a consultation to ask residents their opinion about the green space in front of the future leisure centre to be built on the Sundermead Estate site.

Those that took part to this consultation were presented with a map of the centre of Lewisham and just above said green space there was a big block of irregular shape. And that block was called "New Leisure Centre".

We asked about that part of the development and this is what we heard:

  • At this stage all the Council has is "a wish list" of what they would like to see as part of it
  • there is no plan for it yet or forecast for it
  • there is no developer for it yet
  • it will be a high rise mixed development comprising housing, offices, retail and leisure
  • It is possible that also Mayor Bullock looked at this map and was led to believe that we are at a more advanced stage of the development then in reality is.

Yesterday, Wednesday 20th July 2005, at the last Full Council Meeting before summer break, the Mayor was again asked about the pool(s) issue.

And again he replied by saying that the new leisure facility in the centre of Lewisham is expected to be ready by 2010.
On 6th April he was told by Council Officers that the new pool would not be ready until 2011-12.

We must ask that at the next consultation meeting we are presented with a map that is correctly labelled. One with the block until now called "New Leisure Centre" being called "leisure/housing/retail/office block - still to be planned".

We must all work harder to protect Mayor Bullock from confusion. ...read more...
