About Us

In 2004Lewisham Council announced plans to demolish Ladywell Leisure Centre in 2007 - we saved it! The pool will stay open until the forecast replacement is ready.  Sadly the plan is awfully inadequate and instead of being a plan for a community sport and leisure centre it is a plan for a lifestyle pool for the new residential developments to be built in front of Lewisham Station.

Council wants to replace Ladywell with a small pool

Question by Cllr Dave Bodimeade

What will be the dimensions of the new pool, which will form part of the new Lewisham leisure centre?

Answer by the Head of Sport and Active Recreation at Lewisham Council

Prior to consulting, we are assuming a 25m x 6lane main pool with spectator accommodation and a learner pool (13m x 8.5m).

When the Mayor said that a leisure centre will be a flagship state-of-the-art swimming centre he forgot to tell us that it will also have a main pool 25% shorter then Ladywell with no extra lanes and even a smaller learner pool.

Now Councillor Bodimeade asked Council officers about its size and the answer is that it will actually be a pool so small that the spectator facilities will look almost wasted on it.

But maybe we shouldn't be so suspicious. They also plan to consult with the people and Lewisham Council is earning quite a reputation with its consultations and its consultants.

Those that use Ladywell know that it is full to capacity most of the time. We can't really understand what this assumption of the Head of Sport and Active Recreation at Lewisham Council's is based upon.

The current main pool at Ladywell is 33.53 mt. x 12.5 mt. (6 lanes of decent width) with the learner pool of 18 mt. x 7 mt. ...read more...
