About Us

In 2004Lewisham Council announced plans to demolish Ladywell Leisure Centre in 2007 - we saved it! The pool will stay open until the forecast replacement is ready.  Sadly the plan is awfully inadequate and instead of being a plan for a community sport and leisure centre it is a plan for a lifestyle pool for the new residential developments to be built in front of Lewisham Station.

Street party in Ladywell

Sunday, 1st August 2004 the Ladywell Pool Campaign had a large outlet outside the LLC, this was intended to be our first high visibility initiative.

There were about 15 voluteers to inform as many people as possible. The LLC was indeed on Sunday afternoon hosting an event of Active Sport (Sport England) together with Lewisham Sport & Recreation, a department of Lewisham Council. Well done to both! We need more of these initiatives to promote swimming.
The 20 months of closure of the Ladywell Leisure Centre greatly damaged swimming as a sport (and as a leisure activity) in Lewisham.
The title of the Event was
Splish Splash at London's first Swim Festival and it was aimed at promoting swimming as a sport to Lewisham school children.
By the title of the initiative and the tone of the promotion we thought that there would have been a large participation to this event. It was instead catering for a narrow selection of highly achieving young swimmers.
Therefore there where 17 children (plus brothers and sisters), 34 parents and some coach and official from Lewisham Sport & Recreation.
Most of them signed our petition, tasted the fruit salad and ice cream offered by the Ladywell pool Campaign and received the informations reguarding the background of the mayoral decision to demolish the Ladywell Leisure Centre.
Many would be users of the pool, which didn't know about the closure for this event joined in what became a beatiful street party.
It's been a great afternoon, we made many new friends which will be participating actively on Thursday meeting.
We know now that we can count on a large number of people that is willing to give their Sunday to help the campaign. Better still thinking that they all had a very short notice about this event.
