In 2004Lewisham Council announced plans to demolish Ladywell Leisure Centre in 2007 - we saved it! The pool will stay open until the forecast replacement is ready.  Sadly the plan is awfully inadequate and instead of being a plan for a community sport and leisure centre it is a plan for a lifestyle pool for the new residential developments to be built in front of Lewisham Station.

Lewisham Council's website has today issued an updated and expanded press release on the site search for the new school. In the press release the Mayor also explains the situation with his own words in a very welcome statement on the situation.

I cannot understand why Ladywell Pool has to be moved, nor can I understand the new proposals which seem totally unsuitable. Thhe pool as it is should not be changed, it is the right size for a leasure centre, to move it to where the Police Station was and make it small or placed in a basement is unacceptable. Everywhere buildings people use for leaisure are being pulled down to make way for yet more flats, what a boring concept! We all know that housing is impportant but no though seems to go into the planning. Many children use the Ladywell Pool as their main source of leisure, surely this one thing they can leave for them? and also adults who use it or take their families to the centre. It is well situated for everyone and 25m lanes are needed in order to keep the facility roomy enough for everyone. In the end we will simply have towns with nothing but flats, leisure is important for children, they need something to do and to take this away from them is cruel not to mention future problems it will cause when they try and amuse themselves in the sreets because there will be no where else to go for them, what next, get rid of the parks and build more flats??? Who are these people with such awfull planning ideas anyway? and why do they not listen to the public? I hope this will be rethought, Max Calo has worked so hard on this project and with good reason, he seems to be the only one who has fought for decent proposals, not idiotic ones we keep hearing about.
